About Louis the Goldsmith

In 1971, Alois Johann Wildhaber, better known as Louis, started his 4- year apprenticeship as a 15 year old in Winterthur, Switzerland with the Classic Master Goldsmith, Heinz Mueller, learning all the basic techniques of “real” handmade jewellery.

After graduating, he worked for 3 years in one of the world’s leading high tech manufacturing companies M Meister and Co. in Switzerland.

The two different ways of making jewellery set up his future learning on how to produce the special piece.

At the age of 22 he wanted to see more of the world and ended up taking on a job as a jewellery pattern maker in far away New Zealand.

Enjoying the Kiwi lifestyle he settled in quickly and decided to stay longer by designing collections of jewellery, making and exporting the pieces mainly in Switzerland.

Later he specialised in high quality Opal and Pearl Diamond jewellery in conjunction with the local company Opal Pacific. This work was sold in the USA, Japan, South Korea, Australia, of course Switzerland but also Germany, France and Sweden.

Louis the Goldsmith is an award winning jeweller, with accolades including winning the NZ Walker and Hall award for jewellery and also designing and making the official jewellery collection for the Sydney Olympics.

About 10 years ago, he helped out as a jeweller at Neil Diamonds which has since become Louis the Goldsmith.
